Singing in the Sacred Tradition

The Northernaires have a long history of excellence in gospel music and presence in the community. A one of only two gospel choirs offered as a for-credit class in Indianapolis-area high schools, the group is one of the unique offerings provided by North Central Choirs Debuting in 1990, they are in frequent demand as performers at local churches and other events throughout the city and state.  The 2026-27 Northernaires are a 30-member auditioned mixed choir directed by Daria Weingartner and Tenéh Karimu.

This advanced level gospel choir provides students with learning opportunities that enable them to develop skills of proper tone production, diction, technique and intonation; develop skills in music reading; demonstrate healthy technique and performance skills that are stylistically appropriate to contemporary African American gospel music; and display well-developed solo and ensemble skills in singing repertoire from a variety of historical and cultural genres. This choir studies, rehearses, and performs music from the ISSMA Group II list as well as music from the African American gospel tradition.

Northernaires shares the stage with other North Central Choirs at the Fall Concert each September, More Joyful Sounds of the Season in December, and Spring Concert in May. They also take part in a Midwinter concert during the school day in February.
