The North Central Choir program offers two opportunities for intermediate students seeking a competitive show choir experience. These choirs typically feature underclassmen interested in developing their skills before auditioning for advanced programs as well as a less time-intensive alternative for students seeking to improve their vocal and performing skills.
While there have been several choirs named “Accents” throughout the history of North Central Choirs, the current Accents date back to the 1994-95 school year when the long-running Girls Chorus permanently adopted the name. Since that first group, Accents has served as the first show choir experience for many performers who went on to be part of Counterpoints, Descants, and Kings Court Singers / KC Jazz.
For the 2026-27 school year, Accents is a 51-member auditioned treble univoice show choir directed by Elizabeth Morrison. The group provides students with learning opportunities that enable them to develop skills of proper tone production, diction, technique and intonation; develop basic skills in music reading; demonstrate stage movement, blocking, or choreography appropriate to the music studied; and display well-developed solo and ensemble skills in singing selections from a variety of historical and cultural genres.
Accents traditionally perform at two show choir competitions per year in the Prep/Open/Festival/Tier III division as well as at the North Central Choirs Fall Concert in September, More Joyful Sounds of the Season in December, Show Choir Preview Night in February, Show Choir Showcase in March, and the Spring Concert in May. Accents also performs at the Concert Choir Preview in April and participates in the ISSMA High School Organizational Festival.

Varsity Singers continues a long tradition of men’s choirs at North Central dating back to the mid-1960’s with the addition of the Music Men to the choir mix. That group includes multiple Grammy-winning R&B legend Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds among its alumni. The current iteration of Varsity Singers debuted in the 2003-04 school year.
The 2026-27 Varsity Singers is an auditioned 46-member bass univoice group consisting of underclassmen experiencing their first show choir opportunity, upperclassmen “doublers” who pair their Varsity Singers work with Counterpoints or KC Jazz, and veteran Varsity Singers who balance the choir’s less-rigorous schedule with other school activities and commitments. They are under the direction of Jared Z. McElroy.
Varsity Singers is an intermediate level choir that provides students with learning opportunities that enable them to develop skills of proper tone production, diction, technique and intonation; develop skills in music reading; demonstrate stage movement, blocking, or choreography appropriate to the music studied; and display well-developed solo and ensemble skills in singing selections from a variety of historical and cultural genres. They perform both Concert choir and Show Choir literature.
Varsity Singers offers a unique spin on show choir, adding a dose of humor to the sometimes overly serious show choir culture. Recent Varsity Singers competition sets have had less-than-complex themes like “Top Gun,” “Ken,” “Dodgeball,” and “Ice Cream.” A Varsity Singers set builds around parodies of popular songs from the pop, Broadway, and choral catalogs, spinning songs like Stephen Sondheim’s “Sunday” from Sunday in the Park with George into a tribute to sundae toppings or the alt-rock hit “The Distance” by Cake into a hype song for a huge dodgeball match. And, of course, a Varsity Singers set would be incomplete without an appearance by at least one inflatable costume. The sum of the silliness makes the Varsity Singers set one of the most-anticipated performances of the NC Choirs season.
